Renton High School
A Note From the Principal
Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! I am excited to enter my 13th year as an administrator here at RHS. The RHS Staff and I want to welcome everyone back for an exciting year of learning. For those families new to RHS, I wish you a very warm welcome! I hope each of you had an enjoyable and relaxing summer. To our ninth-grade families, it gives me great pleasure to officially welcome you to Renton High School! I hope you and your child are excited to be part of our community – we are certainly pleased you have joined us. Transitioning to high school is incredibly important, and at RHS, our ninth-grade team, led by Ms. Buchan, works to ensure that it is as smooth and seamless as possible. We work together to support your student through a successful ninth grade while building the foundation for their learning throughout high school and beyond.
Communication and working together is the best way to support student growth and academic achievement. Please check the Monthly E-Newsletter and the week-in-a-glance bulletin (new.) The RHS Monthly Parent E-Newsletter is sent monthly via Smore. Please visit the school website: Renton High School Website for additional information and use the Ask a Question link if you have questions: RHS Ask A Question Link for any questions you may have. Communication and working together is the best way to support student growth and academic achievement. As we begin the new year, our main priorities will be to ensure our students feel safe, included, and cared for in school. We will also continue focusing on our School Improvement Plan, language acquisition (Core Teaching and Learning), developing student voice and pride in identity and linguistic abilities (Social Emotional Learning), and removing language barriers by focusing on cultural affinity (Family Engagement).
Parental involvement is critical to the success of our students. Your involvement can take place at many levels, but the most important is for your children to know how much you support and value their experience at school. We see you as partners in your child’s education. No one knows your child better than you do, so if there is any information that will help us support your child, please do not hesitate to contact me at: Giovanna.sanmartin@rentonschools.us Parental involvement is welcomed and necessary. I invite you to participate in your child’s education and look forward to working with you.
Warmly,
Dr. Giovanna San Martin, RHS Principal

As soon as it is live, information about the app and how it can be found will be posted on the Technology Safety Information for Families page, under “GoGuardian Parent App.”

Athletics
Eligibility for Sports: WIAA Academic Eligibility states that a student must be passing a minimum of 4 out 5 classes to be eligible to participate, and RSD requires that athletes must have a 2.0 GPA to participate. Initial eligibility will be determined for fall sports as athletes will either be “on probation” or “not on probation.”
Before athletes can be eligible to play, they first must be eligible to participate. Please confirm that they have been cleared to do so by the RHS Athletic Assistant, Robert Jangala. To maintain eligibility, during the current trimester, the student shall: pass 4 classes in a 5-period class schedule and have a current GPA of 2.0 above. For fall sports, incoming 9th graders: must receive a grade of 2 or higher on Standard based Grade Reporting in a minimum of 4 out of 6 classes.
This year, a new WIAA amendment has changed the FALL grade check process.
WIAA Amendment 18.7.6: Allows a student to be placed on academic probation at the start of the fall sports season if they failed to meet grade requirements for the 3rd trimester of the previous school year.
Meaning, that if a student did not meet the District and /or WIAA Academic requirements the previous trimester (June 2022), then they are on academic probation (not suspension) and can participate in practice and games until September 30th.
If they fail to meet the grade requirements on September 30th, they will then be suspended for 3 weeks. If they meet the requirements at the September 30th grade check date, then they are no longer on academic probation.
Fall Grade Check Dates
August 17-22nd – Initial eligibility determined
The previous trimester (June 2022) grades will be used to determine initial eligibility.

- Running Start students who are on probation or not: This is a reminder that for those classes you are taking off campus, you must take a screen shot of the classes you are taking along with your name showing that it’s your class and the current grade you are receiving and email it to: Robert.Jangala@rentonschools.us and Aleta.Konkol@rentonschools.us If in addition to being a Running Start student, you are also a Renton High student during the first trimester, you must turn in the tracer grade check form for your RHS classes to the athletic office and the screen shots of your Running Start Classes and those grades to the emails above.
