Following a directive from Washington State Governor Jay Inslee, all Renton School District schools are closed beginning Monday, March 16 through Friday, April 24.

In addition to the resources posted on this page, Renton School District educators and support staff are providing new grade-specific in-home learning materials on each school’s website. Students and families are encouraged to visit their school’s In-Home Learning webpage on Fridays for updated activities.

While the experience of classroom instruction cannot be replaced, school and district teachers and support staff are working to provide engaging in-home learning resources to support student learning.

Our middle and high school students are already able to access the materials being posted for in-home learning on their school-issued Chromebooks. In an effort to ensure elementary students have access, elementary principals sent this form to families earlier this week to allow families to request a Chromebook for temporary use at home.

NOTE: Because high school classrooms do not fall neatly into grade-level categories (as they are laid out on the webpages), high school teachers and support staff are working directly with students to provide in-home learning resources.

Breakfast and Lunch Program (Pre-Order)

Meals are available for any child, ages 1-18, in the front lot of each Renton School from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Meals are “grab and go” - and are intended to be taken off campus or even picked up through car windows. Meals are free and no ID is required. Students can pick up meals at any school or location nearest to them. Child must be present to receive a meal.

This information will help with our planning to be better prepared to serve students. We'll have extra meals available for those who didn't get a chance to order. Childcare for First Responders and Essential Health Care Workers

Washington Governor Jay Inslee has directed school districts to work to provide free childcare services for children kindergarten-5^th grade whose caretakers are first responders and essential health care workers. We recently surveyed our families to determine those who fall into these important life-supporting categories and are in need of this childcare assistance.

Following the governor’s directions, have created a service for these professionals. If you fall into the category of first responders or essential health care worker and did not have a chance to respond to the survey, please contact community.relations@rentonschools.us. Space is limited; and we can only provide this service to those in the life-care categories.

Who is a first responder?
A person who works for police, fire, paramedics, etc.

Who is an essential health care worker?
A person who works for a medical facility, including at nursing homes, doctor’s offices, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, adult family homes, etc.

Other Child Care resources:

Child Care Aware of Washington —This statewide nonprofit operates a database of licensed child care providers. You can search its database online or call its Family Center Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at 1-800-446-1114.

YMCA of Greater Seattle — The Y is turning its 14 closed branches into child care centers for the families of medical personnel, first responders, and anyone who needs to work to support the community. They have the capacity for 700 kids total .You can find a list of sites here and register by emailing registration@seattleymca.org.

Boys & Girls Club — The Boys & Girls Club will be offering a full day of care for school-aged children at their clubs around Seattle. There are no additional costs for current club members. Others will have to pay a $50 membership fee and a $25 per day fee to attend. Find your local club here and call them to find out their hours.

Weekdays — A new technology company called Weekdays helps pair vetted in-home child care providers with nearby families. They are focused on providing care for families where the adults have to continue working.

2-1-1 — You can call 2-1-1 from any phone to be connected to a list of statewide resources for everything from food and diapers to rental assistance and bus fare. You can also search their online database.

State government website – The state’s new one-stop-shop for government advice and updates about the pandemic.

Rental assistance list —The Rental Housing Association of Washington and the Washington Multifamily Housing Association put together this list of rental assistance programs in King County.

Communities in Schools Renton/Tukwila (CISR) has set-up a Basic Needs Emergency Fund to help families of our students through these uncertain times and address the immediate needs of economically vulnerable populations.

With your support, we can come together and support those most impacted by addressing the economic impact of reduced and lost work due to the broader COVID-19 outbreak. Families need food, personal care items, rental and utility assistance, gas cards, and more.

Free Internet

While Renton School District has provided many of our students and families with hotspot internet accessibility, there is still a need by some families for internet service. Some internet service providers are finding a way to fill the gap to help students continue learning at home through the Keep Americans Connected Initiative. The agreement by these companies pledges for the next 60 days to:

not terminate service to any residential or small business customers because of their inability to pay their bills due to the disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic;
waive any late fees that any residential or small business customers incur because of their economic circumstances related to the coronavirus pandemic; and
open its Wi-Fi hotspots to any American who needs them.

Comcast is offering Internet Essentials as an affordable way for homes who receive public assistance to get online. The plan is available for about $10 per month. In addition, they are increasing speeds for all customers in response to emergency measures associated with the coronavirus, and new customers receive two months free.

Charter/Spectrum: Charter Communications is offering free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 or college students at any service level up to 100 Mbps. Installation fees are also waived. This is only for homes that do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription.
Mediacom is upgrading its low-cost Connect2Compete internet program and offering 60 days of free service for qualifying families who subscribe before May 15.
Suddenlink: New household with K-12 or college students who do not currently have home internet access can get free internet for 60 days.

Dear Families of Students with Disabilities,

As Renton School District works to support our families and community during this exceptionally challenging time, we want to assure you that the needs of exceptional learners are being taken into consideration. The Federal Government and the State of Washington are currently developing guidance for the provision of special education services during school closures and changes to education models as a result of COVID-19. We are monitoring the development of guidance carefully and we are committed to partnering with you through frequent communication.

Currently, please note the following information was shared by Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI):

“Districts should also consider ways to use distance technology (e.g., Zoom, conference calls) to the extent possible to provide child find, hold initial and annual IEP meetings, and/or evaluation/eligibility meetings, if staff and parents are available but not able to attend in person. Continuing to complete IEP and evaluation/eligibility meetings will help decrease the workload when school resumes. If staff and/or parents are not available or believe their participation is impacted by the lack of an in-person meeting, districts should document the reason and complete the activity in a timely manner following the ending of school closures.”

Accordingly, our IEP and evaluation teams are in the process of setting up virtual meetings with families. You may be contacted by staff to schedule a special education team meeting via phone or video conference.

Your student’s individual needs are very important to the Renton School District team. We are not providing services to students during this closure. We plan to meet with IEP teams, including families, when school resumes to address student specific needs resulting from the closure. If you have questions or concerns about your student’s services at this time, please do not hesitate to contact our Special Education Department at 425-204-2280.

We will be providing ongoing communication to keep you informed as guidance is updated.

Families of Students with Disabilities,

Instruction in the form of virtual learning is being developed to support students and families during this closure. This includes special education and related services, such as speech language therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.

Special education services and accommodations will be provided via virtual learning.
Special education teachers and related services providers will collaborate with general education teachers and make all reasonable efforts to make virtual learning resources accessible to students with disabilities.
Virtual instruction will not look the same as classroom instruction.
Focus will be on progress toward IEP goals and providing access to the general education curriculum delivered.

Please see below resources to support virtual learning. We will be providing updates and additional resources which can be found on this page as well as linked on the Students and Families page

Each school has in-home learning resources on their school webpage. Special education teachers and related services providers (e.g. OTs, PTs, SLPs) are developing resources for these school pages as well. Additionally, teachers and related service providers are available via email and video conferencing.

Please reach out to your student’s special education teacher or related service provider if you have questions about support for your student at home during the closure.

Our educators, therapists, office support, and administrators are working virtually during normal school hours.

The week of April 6-10 is spring break. Staff will be unavailable during break. Staff will return on Monday, April 13th with continued distance learning.
